English Dub Review: Fruits Basket “Who Are You?”

Overview (Spoilers Below)

As the Beach Arc, wraps up with the Sohma family. Tohru hardens her resolve to protect the Sohma’s from Akito more than ever…

Our Take

They finally revealed what Akito is to the 12 Sohma Zodiacs, and suddenly all my questions are sort-of answered. It all makes sense why the Zodiac members don’t just disobey Akito’s orders. But it feels too damn implausible as I’m afraid I’ll be needing more than this to justify his/her actions, however.

It’s more endearing to also know that every single moment spent with Tohru for the Sohmas, regardless of how silly, comedic, and whimsical they can be…is basically a temporary respite, a sense of freedom, those brief moments where they can actually feel like normal human beings and not individuals chained down by a sickening curse. Tohru is certainly ballsy enough to stand her ground against Akito, she came face to face with such a terrifying person and yet still has the strength and kindness to want to fight her to give her friends a better future.

Overall, a pretty decent episode to conclude this quite eventful arc. The episode properly balanced a sense of hopelessness and hopefulness, as it managed to pull off dark scenes with Akito and then later switch to heartwarming scenes with the rest of the Sohmas without giving you a case of emotional whiplash.
