English Dub Review: Fruits Basket The Final Season “See You Again Soon”

Overview

Tohru, the Somas, and all of their friends prepare for the next chapters of their lives…

Out Take

The final episode is not a climax episode so the value it adds less than the previous one even with a sudden 50-year time skip/epilogue. But it’s good to have an ending that manages to tie up loose ends at least. Even the other Somas are living life as they see fit this time, now that there are no walls between outsiders and the Sohma Family. One such case is Arisa’s crush on Kureno, finally sorting out her feelings towards him. The most surprising is Akito wearing woman-like clothes, now that’s a big change.

However with all the highs, we’re seeing here, It’s not without a large low, as Akito seems to be one of the two large plot holes. You can’t just forgive and forget with Akito AND her enablers. Akito is a criminal and she doesn’t deserve our pity and much less love. She still needs some form of punishment but that’s just me. The other thing I disliked was Akito’s mom, Ren. Obviously, the anime needs to victimize Akito after everything she has done with a new and poorly written antagonist whose only purpose is to be a despicable piece of shit to almost everyone in every scene, and yet she’s completely ignored for the last half of this…

While not a perfect ending, it lived up to what it accomplished in making an adaptation that does the source material of the manga justice much in the same way Hellsing: Ultimate and FMA: Brotherhood have done in the past. I also liked how the final episode is not only a respectable send-off to Tohru as a character but also a farewell to the audience and series as a whole.
