English Dub Review: Dragon Ball Super “With His Pride on the Line! Vegeta’s Challenge to Be the Strongest!”

With only two universes remaining left (7 and 11) after the events of the previous episode, the stakes have been raised since the Grand Minister of the Universe Tournament in the bleachers so that the remaining spectators are all close together It’s a comedically awkward scene but gets the point across the sense of urgency it entails with a 5 against 3 battle consisting of Goku Vegeta, Gohan, Android 17 and Frieza against The Universe 3 Warriors Jiren Dyspo and Toppo.

As The final warriors begin their battle, Gohan and Android 17 take on Toppo, Frieza goes against the purple bunny Dyspo, and Goku and Vegeta battle Jiren as he’s no pushover when he overwhelms Goku with a flurry of punches, but Vegeta is able to analyze Jiren’s attack patterns and dodges his attacks and even manages to land a solid blow to Jiren’s midsection, but of course this seems too easy as Jiren counters with a powerful blast that nearly puts Vegeta out of commission.

Meanwhile, Frieza blocks one of Dyspo’s attacks with his tail, but in a clever scene, Dyspo uses it as leverage to injure him in a scene that felt reminiscent of the 3rd act battle from Freddy Vs Jason, whole Toppo shows he’s no pushover against Gohan & 17. The battles themselves are still well-animated scene, but much focus is put on Jiren who during his battle with Vegeta is ballsy enough to smack-talk him for his self-righteousness, but Vegeta declares that his pride is the source of his strength. He powers up a Final Flash and goads Jiren into taking it head-on. However, the attack fails to damage Jiren, While giving Vegeta points for his efforts, the episode ends with a massive cliffhanger as Vegeta’s fate remains uncertain after taking a blast to the stomach.

Our Take

As expected, Jiren was quite a heavy-hitter, but Vegeta’s Final Flash attack was something. However, his reaction after he saw Jiren laying on the ground reminded me of his usual character flaw which was often his overconfidence. I know the show lately has stressed the importance of Jiren during the course of this tournament, but at least proceedings don’t feel wasted with the other two battles, especially Frieza whooping some ass on his own.

I think most of the animation in this episode was delivered in spades during the battle between Vegeta, though part of me still saw the outcome a mile away despite seeing Vegetas moment to shine being so damn brief.

with “8 minutes left” of the tournament, let’s hope Vegeta and what’s left the of Universe 7 team make it through this in the next episode.
