English Dub Review: Dragon Ball Super “Goku vs The Duplicate Vegeta! Which One is going to Win?!”

Let’s find out!

Overview (Spoilers Below)

The battle between Goku vs Purple Vegeta begins and it becomes a race against time given the sense of urgency during the proceedings as we’re once again reminding Goku and by extension, the audience that Vegeta’s purple copy needs to be defeated before the real Vegeta transparently fades out of existence. The battle itself is pretty damn intense and at first, Goku begins to get the upper hand until the real Vegeta grows impatient in a comedic scene where he both heckles and encourages both sides and expects both of them to give it their all as they continue to fight in their base forms. Knowing that time is running out, Goku decides to go Super Saiyan Blue, and much to the shock of everyone, it turns out Purple Vegeta can also access this SS-Blue power making the battle evenly matched.

Given that it’s Akira Toriyama’s writing, he still at least knows how to balance things out with comedic moments such as Potage telling the real Vegeta that he should put the pacifier that was used as a key from the last two episodes in his mouth to extend what little time he has left since it’s laced with an antidote designed to suppress the purple blob’s power, while Potage tells the others that Purple Vegeta along with the blob-mass has a weak spot called a “core” and if they destroy the original portion of the blob which has this Core (which is represented by a glowing yellow gem) It’ll kill the creature and reverse Vegeta’s condition. While the battle between both SS-Blue warriors rages on, a good portion of the episode is spent on the others chasing after the purple blob to that has the gem which was last seen on Purple Gryll’s body. But the purple sludge attempts a surprise attack on the others and things start getting bleak when the blob-like puddle that Gryll was part of tries to absorb Trunks, and Vegeta is unable to pull his own son out of danger.

In the third act, Monaka out of dumb luck, steps back and crushes the blob’s core without even noticing it and recognizing that Purple Vegeta is in pain from this, and Goku seizes this opportunity by using his iconic Kamehameha on Purple Vegeta which not only ends the battle for good but saves Vegeta and everyone else in the process. Potage decides to trap what’s left of the purple liquid back in the vault and resumes his guardian status while everyone else goes back to Earth along with Goten & Trunks being reunited with their mothers. At first, I thought that would’ve been the ending but the real ending sets-up the newest story-arch for next week as we see a terrified Future Trunks running in the dystopian future from something big, along with a message to fans that “A New Chapter Breaks”.

Our Take

Because of the lie, Beerus forced everyone to keep quiet about in regards to Monaka, it’s still pretty damn funny that Goku remains oblivious about it, even though Monaka didn’t take that much effort to destroy the purple blob-thing. Brian Drummond’s performance once again voicing Purple Vegeta in the English dub while short-lived, was so over the top and vicious, yet kept me entertained.

As for the return of Future Trunks, I’m very much looking forward to this. We haven’t seen him since the Cell Saga on DBZ and whatever this current threat is that’s terrorizing his future this time, it’s gotta be something even worse than the Androids or even Perfect Cell.
