English Dub Review: Dr. Stone: Stone Wars: “Steam Gorilla”

Overview: Senku (Aaron Dismuke), Kinro (Josh Grelle), Kohaku (Felecia Angelle) and others from Ishigami Village make their way to the Empire of Might to rescue Chrome (Matt Shipman) and defeat Tsukasa (Ian Sinclair) and his army once and for all.

Our Take: Senku may be one of the world’s smartest people, especially so in the stone world. Heck, he even taught me how to upgrade a tank’s defense with paper of all things making it tough as nails! Not to mention I had no idea you could make paper with something besides some sort of wood. Learning new aspects of the scientific process in items and objects commonly used in our day to day is always fun. The process is even more engaging because of how much we tend to take them for granted along with their newfound importance in the technologically underdeveloped landscape the world has established.

But along with Senku’s genius that is often on display, he may also be one of the kindest people in the stone world as well. “Steam Gorilla” really drives that point home as we see the side of him that he often tries to hide in his compassion for others such as Chrome, elderly villagers and Ishigami Village as a whole. It’s aspects like these that make Senku more than one dimensional and not only makes him more personable but allows Senku to feel like a genuine human being with his own quirks.

Also, this season continues to ramp up its main conflict nicely as Senku, Kohaku, Suika and the gang stake out Tsukasa’s empire. Chrome hatching a plan to escape and warn his friends of the traps continues to put mental prowess at the forefront of the character and the show. In doing so it also maintains the momentum the season has already built. Another cool aspect is how, like with the many other ingenious ideas Senku and Chrome in particular have come up with, it has you wondering just how Chrome will MacGyver his way out of this predicament

Each episode has felt like a necessary stepping stone to the upcoming conflict and episode 5 is yet another rock laying the foundation as Senku brings the fight to Tsukasa and beefs up his army. Stone Wars continues to make haste as it has yet to waste one second of screen time in it’s shorter season run and also not to the detriment of what makes it so special in the first place.
