English Dub Review: Demon Lord, Retry! “Yu Kirino”

Overview:

Two warriors run into some trouble.

Our Take:

This episode pretty much solidifies it, every girl is set to fall in love with the main character. Or boy, if we count the new mage. (It’s unclear whether they are trans or not as of this episode, so I am assuming from what little information we are given that they are a cross-dressing boy. If this ends up being untrue in later episodes, I will amend my statement.) Regardless, it seems like the entire cast is set up to fall for the main character, which is extremely boring. Isekai anime isn’t necessarily all harem anime (even if unfortunately, they seem to overlap a lot), but this is shaping up to be one. Even if the main character lampshades it, it still counts.

I actually really like Kirino as the demon king’s mad scientist but very perceptive strategist. She’s also brought to this unfamiliar place but is able to very quickly get the hang of things. Her intellect will absolutely become a real asset.

It’s really kind of unfortunate that every single character, especially the women, all seem to have fetish jokes made about them. The only one that’s exempt from this rule is the main character because he’s too cool, I guess. Even if he lampshades this too, it’s really unfortunate. There’s more humor than just sex jokes, it gets really boring after a while? I guess I shouldn’t be expecting too much out of this show, but really…

Also, unfortunately, it seems that Aku is definitely set up to have romantic feelings for the main character. Could every girl stop falling for the main character, please? This is doubly unfortunate because Aku, for the most part, seems to be a child, and their relationship is set up to be a more parental one. She looks up to him, and he cares a lot for her. He’s basically her dad! I actually really like their parental-adoptive child relationship, because he’s someone that she trusts, and she’s a spark of happiness in an otherwise foreign world. But no… I guess that’s coming to an end. I hope at the very least he rejects her because this could just be her latching on to the first person that showed her kindness, but somehow I doubt the show is going to think that far.

It really is a shame because this show started out relatively okay. Nothing grand or impressive, but passable.
