English Dub Review: Cells at Work: Code Black “Kidneys, Kidney Stones, and Tears”

Overview:

A massive kidney stone wreaks havoc on the urinary tract. RBC continues to get better and stronger as a character. Luckily, endoscopic surgery and anti-biotics come to the rescue.

Our Take:

I haven’t spoken too much about the voice acting in this show so far. It hasn’t been bad by any means but nothing has really stood out. That is until I went back and rewatched some of the episodes. I have been commenting on how RBC has had really great character development and that is in no small part because of his voice actor as well. In the first few episodes Kyle McCarley sounded timid, scared, and at times fed up. Now he sounds confident, and there is little waver in his voice. It’s little nuances like this that really sell a performance to me.

While the character of WBC hasn’t really progressed that isn’t really Allegra Clark’s fault. I think she has done a really good job with the character. Her strength and stoicism are pretty prevalent in every line. J Michael Tatum has also put in good work as the Brain Cell. You can feel his frustration and stress at how poorly this body is doing.

RBC has kind of turned into your prototypical hero character but a few things set it apart. One, we saw how he started and what he went through so most of this growth has been earned. Second, he’s still not “strong” not in the classic sense at least. He isn’t running into fights and winning. He just stands up for himself and is an inspiration to his fellow cells. Where once WBC inspired him now he is the one inspiring her. I think their relationship is pretty unique and well done but would like some more development from WBC.

RBC was going to do everything he could to get that kidney stone moving, I was so proud. Luckily the person got endoscopic surgery and the kidney stone was destroyed. Unluckily, a flood of bacteria and germs followed the tool in as well. The outnumber WBC’s did what they could but some got through and one cell died protecting another. Eventually, anti-biotics came and cleaned up the rest of the germs. Brain cell is still concerned and I don’t really blame him.

I also really like how I feel like I learn something new every week. I mean jokes aside even the sex episode had some interesting things that I didn’t know. This episode taught me a lot about the kidneys and what they do. Also, let me know how important they are and I should probably drink more water as I said. Can’t wait to see what I learn next week.
