English Dub Review: Black Clover “The Final Attack”

(Possible Spoilers Below)

As Yami and Charlotte survive the Black Devil’s formless magical mass, Yami saves enough magic for one last Dimension Slash. It’s here when Secre realizes that while this black demon created Asta’s Grimoire, it was another demonic creature who gave it anti-magic that Asta is so damn synonymous with. Yuno manages to gather the remains of Lumiere and Licht’s magic to forge an air sword capable of hurting the Demon while Asta manages to overfill his sword with anti-magic, turning it into the Anti-Magic Demon-Slaying sword known as the “Black Divider”.

Upon witnessing this battle, Lumiere is highly impressed with both of them. Working together Asta manages to stab the Black Devil’s heart, only for it to reappear undamaged. in retaliation, the creature summons even more mass. Lumiere and Licht decide they must let Asta and Yuno fight the devil while they use the Demon Dweller sword to cast a spell to protect everyone in the dungeon. Even though they are an impossible distance away Yami decides to aim his Dimension Slash at the Demon using his own magical methods.

Asta and Yuno both stab the devil but is possibly one of the few times in this series Asta has finally reached a disadvantage when he runs out of Anti-magic. When the Black Devil prepares to kill them both, Yami casts his largest Dimension Slash and cuts the devil in half. Secre uses her sealing magic to help Asta recover, and as she flashes back through all the enemies she has watched Asta defeat through sheer willpower, Secre gives Asta one hell of an inspirational speech that encourages Asta to go the distance and the episode ends when we see Asta resummon his anti-magic and as the title implies decides to go for a “Final Attack” against this demonic monstrosity that’s caused so much deception, death, and misery throughout the history of Black Clover’s lore.

Our Take

This was one of the best episodes I’ve seen so far. Amazing to see how strong everyone is. Especially when Yami, Asta, and Yuno were fighting together. I loved the animation and background music of this episode. Also, am I the only one who thinks the Black Devil’s design almost resembles Ryuk from Death Note? the only difference here is this Black Devil creature doesn’t really have an individual name and is more of a sadistic bastard compared to Ryuk, not to mention the magic of his formless black mass is rather creepy as each time he’s damaged, the open wounds on his body begin to form multiple mouths with sharp rigid Piranha-like teeth which work both on an artistic and intricate level that delivers in terms of creepiness. But just watching Asta’s final battle at the end was quite effective when it delivered that level of epicness.

Overall, I haven’t felt this level of hype for an episode since that Goku Vs Hit battle in Dragonball Super. Seeing all the journeys Asta had and Nero believing in him, the Opening music on the fight that thunders in the background, and Yami, Yuno, and Asta going for the attack. It was very emotional. but much like the end of a DragonballZ or DB Super Story-Arch, I expect some fillers after something this colossal in terms of plot to tie up loose ends. What kind of threats will they encounter next? And most of all, what will happen to the reincarnated elves and the repercussions it’ll most likely leave behind and the potential ripple effect it’ll most likely have for the rest of the series.

I guess we’ll find out in the next episode.
