English Dub Review: Black Clover “Humans Who Can Be Trusted”

(Possible Spoilers Below)

While stuck in the dream-world, the Elf-possessed “Reve” prevents the exit doors from opening with chains. Luck suggests making Reve defeat herself by creating a doll that resembles Reve’s human body, tricking her into thinking about and summoning a non-possessed version of Captain Dorothy Unsworth. As a character, Dorothy who is normally asleep turns out to be a hyperactively cheerful person within the Dream World. Meanwhile, Asta finds it impossible to take-on Drowa while avoiding his lasers and Eclat’s paralyzing stare. While Henry throws himself at Drowa and Eclat, draining their magic while attempting to sacrificing himself.

As Asta urges him to live and Henry changes his mind and is saved by his friends while Asta manages to attack Drowa. It’s here when we get to one of the more interesting parts as it’s a flashback told from Drowa perspective as he recalls that when the elves were being murdered by human royals who used a magic item to steal their magic for themselves, and even after the ass-kicking he got from Asta, he realizes that Asta and the Black Bulls are nothing like the assholes who hurt his people thousands of years ago and before allowing Asta to nullify his and Eclat’s reincarnations, he gives him a cryptic warning…

As Gauche awakes we learn that he’s a bit of a Misanthrope himself like Dowa and berates the Bulls for risking themselves for him when he only ever cared about Marie and not them, though the Bulls insist they consider him a friend anyway. And after Reve’s Dream World begins to collapse from the magic of Reve and Dorothy colliding inside it. Dorothy disappears but urges Reve to consider the same message that’s been properly conveyed earlier by Dowa, especially the Bulls. As the Dream World collapses everyone reappears in the normal world and Asta manages to also cure Dorthy of Reve’s possession. The episode ends when all the Bulls are fully reunited, and Asta declares it is time to find their Captain Yami.

Our Take

This was a very fun episode and compared to the false cliffhanger we had in regards to Henry attempting to sacrifice himself for the team would’ve been a great development and showed actual stakes in the battle, not that I wanted him dead, but realistically, war is not without casualties and as Drowa warns Asta, at some point there’s going to be an unavoidable scenario where Asta is unable to save someone/everyone. As for Drowa’s flashback, the plot-twist that the humans of the past were directly responsible for the Elve’s contempt for humanity was disappointing that it turned out to be so straightforward. Since they never showed the humans before up until now and had a sinking suspicion that the stories regarding the elves’ vengeance against the humans might have been built on a lie. History as a whole since the beginning of mankind has had its share of embellishments and historical inaccuracies, but as they say: “history is written by the victor”.

Only time will tell what’s going to happen next since Yuno’s necklace is still considered to be the plot-McGuffin for the remaining Elves to chase after at this point.
