English Dub Review: Angels of Death “Your grave is not here”

Gravestones, in a row.

Overview:

Rachel and Zack strike up a mutual agreement.

Our Take:

This episode was less awkward than the first one, but still very much in the realm of awkward.

Zack and Rachel decide to team up together but despite their mutual goals (Zach escaping the facility after being marked as a target and Rachel wishing for death), they have very different personalities and kind of a funny dynamic. Rachel, who seems to have been traumatized by something, is suppressing her emotions and wishing for death, but as a deeply religious person, she can’t commit suicide. She can, however, ask someone else to kill her, and the person she chooses to put that wish on is Zack. I have some issues with Rachel’s presentation, as it doesn’t seem to be the happenings of the facility that have traumatized her as much as some unknown prior event, and we don’t know what that is. As a result, her deep longing of death seems a little bit off, which is only compounded by how rushed the series is. However, her emotional repression is the one thing keeping Zack from killing her.

Zack, as we find out, is just in it to kill people. Whatever his past is doesn’t matter as much to him, as long as he can act violent and slaughter whoever he can. When Rachel confronts him with information on his past, he seems almost annoyed by it, as he can’t be swayed by whatever happened before. First and foremost, he’s a killer- but as many serial killers do, he has a switch, a code of conduct. He’s only interested in murdering people who are fearful and expressive of their fear- and Rachel is neither. He wants to get out of there alive, but he’d likely just go back to killing like he was before. He agrees to kill Rachel in the end, but also finds it annoying that she refuses to at least be expressive.

As a duo, they work really well with Rachel being the brains (and aware of how puzzle games function) and Zack being the impatient one skilled with violence. This series is dragging, but the characters have a spark of potential.

That being said, I really do enjoy the voice acting. Zack’s VA completely hamming it up seems very in tune with Zack’s character, and it really adds to the performance. I think I’m honestly enjoying the dub more than the original- and usually, it’s the other way around. So honestly, good job. I’d say the voice acting seems to be carrying the series, actually!
