English Dub Review: Angels of Death “A sinner has no right of choice”

It’s showtime.

Overview:

Zack and Rachel enter the third floor, with a floor master that’s intent on controlling every move.

Our Take:

It’s a new floor, with a new floor master and a whole new set of complications.

Cathy’s floor is systematic, oppressive, and terrifying. Her floor is a giant prison cell with her as the warden and executioner, and she decides brutal punishments on a whim. Neither Zack or Rachel are allowed to proceed until they somehow complete Cathy’s very specific rules and torments, all of which are designed to slowly torture them into submission. She doesn’t allow them a single moment of peace, as they’re constantly under her watchful gaze. In that sense, the title is extremely apt- they are not given the choice to do anything if they want to continue on except resist Cathy through survival.

Design-wise, it’s also very creepy. She has no audience, as they are the only person besides her on the floor, so the rest of her company is filled with dolls or audio recordings. Unlike Eddie, who is the quintessential creepy yandere child who writes love letters to the latest object of his obsessions, Cathy’s floor actually works. She’s domineering, takes pleasure in seeing people suffer, and her floor reflects reality a little too harshly sometimes- that once you’re in prison for whatever reason, the entire system actively works against you, and punishes you for the smallest transgressions with unspoken rules that you might not understand. While there’s no question that Zack is the exact kind of criminal that Cathy believes deserves punishment, as someone who gleefully cuts people down, probably deserves some punishment in some regard, it’s still a little harrowing to see him get tortured in an electric chair.

It works, and while I feel that a lot of the previous episodes were trying hard to be creepy, this time it’s actually inching towards something that is creepy. It’s prison, you can’t get out, you have to obey the rules of your enemy, and you are monitored every inch of the way. Your misery is taken as a comedy, and people take great pleasure in seeing you suffer. That’s a tone that’s satisfying horror- not some little kid trying to dig your grave and creepy messages on the walls.

However, Zack should also definitely not have been able to survive that electrocution, unless the chair is really low on power but, details.
