English Dub Review: ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection “Jean the Cigarette-Peddler”

Get ready to snore.

Spoilers Below

Jean Otus is a chain-smoking auditor that works for ACCA, an inspection agency in which Jean is second in command and is tasked with going to the different branches littered throughout the 13 territories to both perform an audit and bring to light any possible controversies. Early on in the episode, he does just that in the nick of time just as his department is to be shut-down. As a result of his recent win, Jean is tasked to go through each and every one of the district branches one by one within the next six months to do a bunch more audits. But, it appears that the head of the five chiefs of ACCA, Grossular, is prepared to do a little investigation of his own into Jean.

Our Take

The aesthetic of this show is one of the best I’ve seen on Funimation in the new year. It’s got this drab old-school detective show vibe to it that fits the atmosphere and Jean’s attitude well. Problem is, for a series being listed as a drama, it’s not all that dramatic. The dialogue is kinda drab and Austin Tindle’s take on Jean just bores me to tears. I get that the character is supposed to be dull, but jeez. The ancillary characters try to do a bit more to liven up the atmosphere whether they are in the office or at home, but this 24-minute runtime is gonna feel like an hour…hopefully this show picks up soon because a premise about performing a bunch of audits isn’t that exciting, to begin with.
