DVD Review: Dragons: Defenders of Berk Part 1

$17 for a DVD can’t be a bad purchase, right?

For a collection of episodes, there is a bit of value here. The episodes, when bought online, run for two dollars. For $17, you’re actually making out with a bargin. And then you have special features.

The Dragon Tracker, while cute, only tells you what you already know about the 3 dragons displayed. It’s great for those who haven’t seen the season yet, but doesn’t do much for the diehards. It’s about 1:45 per dragon, with a very brief “coming soon” for the Skrill.

“The Evolution of the Screaming Death” gives you a behind the scenes look at the creation of the dragon, going into the lore. It shows some really cool rough animations, and tells you why it was designed the way it was. However, there’s nothing really screaming,

“I have to watch this.” But completely useless was the “Superfly” music video. The song was generic, and shorter than an MTV music block. On disc one, they put another extra, where it’s a collection from the World of Dreamworks. I guess it was to force kids to look on both discs? The videos are great for kids who like the cheesy pop songs that generally are stitched onto the promotional work for the movies. But for this audience, it is a definite miss.

I think that this is a good enough deal to get on its own. Unfortunately, knowing how home releases work, I can see that Dreamworks will just shaft us and put a Blu-Ray out. If you’re in a bind, and just have to have it, then pick it up. As long as you’re getting it for less than$20, then it is a defined value. As a total package, and almost inevitable complete season release later on, this can wait, because the features aren’t anything special.
