“Dragon Ball Super: Broly” Hits American Theaters Next Year!

When Broly Canon? NOW BROLY CANON!

Dragon Ball, one of the most enduring anime franchises in the industry, returns to theaters soon with its twentieth film, as well as the first under the Super title. “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” will explore the history of the Saiyan race and its connection to iconic series villain Frieza and, as the title suggests, the first canonical appearance by breakout from the eighth DBZ movie, Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan.

Initially making fans due to his immense size and power level, Broly has remained popular figure in the franchise despite his rather flat characterization. With this film being helmed and written by original series creator Akira Toriyama, he hopes to add a new dimension to the roided out stick of broccoli, most notably by linking him directly to the show’s in-universe myth of the “Legendary Super Saiyan” instead of just slapping the title on him like before.

Since the 2013 theatrical premiere of “Battle of Gods” and the following year’s “Resurrection F”, Dragon Ball has gotten a resurgence in popularity and focus, culminating in the return to TV with “Dragon Ball Super” which wrapped earlier this year with the end of the “Universal Survival Arc”. Whether the series will return may be up to the success of this upcoming movie, but for now, it’s still worth getting hyped.

“Dragon Ball Super: Broly” comes to American theaters in January 2019. Check out the official announcement on Funimation’s website for more information and keep reading Bubbleblabber for future updates and our eventual review of the film.
