Comics Review: Steven Universe #8

Steven Universe kicks-off Halloween a week before October in comic form.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

The story begins during a “Haunted Cornfield Maze” Halloween event at Greg’s family barn where Steven warns Garnet not to use her “future vision” to cheat which she takes into consideration. The first two patrons who enter are Lars & Buck followed closely by Steven who then discovers a bomb shelter underneath the cornfield which leads to a large yet harmless Lizard Gem creature living there. Steven assures Garnet that it isn’t causing any harm but Garnet suggests that they should prioritize the safety of the humans knowing the creature would behave like a scared territorial animal if its habitat is disrupted and she ends up being right when it later grabs Lars after he encounters the tunnel on his own.

Without wasting time, they save the day and “bubble” the creature in its Gem form without doing any serious harm and long after the Halloween event is finished, Steven & Garnet take the creature back in it’s bubbled form to the tunnel as it wasn’t a serious threat, to begin with. And the story ends when Garnet assures Steven that Lars & Peridot don’t have to know as she predicts that the creature will be fine in “Most possible outcomes”.

Our Take

This is the closest thing we’ve ever gotten to a Steven Universe Halloween special. I especially liked when Garnet & Steven decide to put the creature back in it’s captured “bubbled” form as understandably, it only behaved like any scared animal would. With art by Katy Farina in combination with the writing of Melanie Gillman both whom never disappoint in consistently capturing the essence of the show as they have with previous issues in Kaboom entertainment’s current run. It’s also clear this comic takes place long before Season 5 given the significant changes that were recently made with Lars.
