Comics Review: Steven Universe #7

Finally! A Variant cover that show’s who’s actually in this comic.

Possible Spoilers Below.

The story starts out innocent enough with Steven doing his own thing but encounters Onion about to go on a boat trip with his father Yellowtail. After some small-talk between the two, the real meat of the story doesn’t actually pick up until Steven finds out that the Gems are using their small boat to seek-out & retrieve a gem artifact called the “Cabouchon Circlet” which is in a remote location inaccessible by their warp pad. Steven and the Gems eventually get to the island but they encounter a territorial red gem monstrosity guarding it, who shipwrecks the Gems in their first attempt because it seems to be attracted to some Gummy worm candies Steven brought with him during their small journey.

Out of sheer dumb luck, Onion & Yellowtail show up at just the right time and save the day by rescuing them and in a joint-effort, eventually defeat the monster together and get the artifact The comic happily ends when they all celebrate by fishing on Yellowtail’s boat.

Our Take

With writing once again by Grace Kraft and Art by Meg Omac, the presentation consistently excels in visual storytelling for the action scenes as many of them had very little dialogue but it got the point across. The comic itself was much shorter than the previous Steven Universe comics I’ve also covered from “Kaboom” which could easily pass as filler episodes like the other ones. The Artstyle tells me it takes place within the current timeline possibly between Seasons 4 & 5 since Amethyst is wearing a white shirt which she did when she previously reformed after their past battle with Jasper a while back. And finally, extra points go to the Variant cover artist Sara Talmadge for actually not misleading the reader by showing who’s actually in the comic.
