Comics Review: Steven Universe #4

Another misleading cover but a decent story.

Spoilers Below

The plot begins with Steven, Peridot and Amethyst going to a local renaissance festival event at Beach City but had to pay for admission for Peridot due to being short enough to pass as a 12-year-old. A good chunk of the comic is spent on Peridot interacting with various booths but being left with absolute disappointment because her height still mistakes her as a child to the booths she goes to and even gets a toy sword. They stop to see a jousting tournament which leaves Peridot excited and further becomes fascinated when Onion partakes in a joust and wins which inspires Peridot to joust herself thinking she’ll have the advantage due to her small height but ends up losing and demands a rematch where she impulsively smacks the opponent’s nose which consequently gets her temporarily kicked out but promises to control her temper which Steven compliments her maturity in the matter and the comic comedically ends with Onion releasing all the barn animals while Peridot says to Steven & Amethyst “Yep that’s me, everyday a better more mature Gem”.

Our Take

While the cover was just as misleading as the previous comic I reviewed since Pearl is nowhere to be found in this plot, it was still refreshing to see a Peridot story. The producers certainly understand Rebecca Sugar’s characters in a way that any of these stories could pass as a good filler episode in terms of character growth. Peridot still has a lot to learn when it comes to earth customs & proper earth decorum and this issue further exemplifies that.
