Comics Review: Kanan – The Last Padawan #2

Kanan 2

What Kanan – The Last Padawan does really well is expand the scope of Order 66, and give us more members of the Jedi Order. Considering that the Jedi that were shown in the prequels were limited to Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, Yoda, Aayla Secura, Kit Fisto, among a few others, seeing the Jedi population expand by two is a pretty good thing. That said, expanding the amount of Jedi that haven’t been mentioned before is pretty simple, such as Kanan and his Master, Depa Billaba.

Now, what Kanan – The Last Padawan #2 did was give a more in depth look (although not by much) into Order 66, which was basically a full battalion of Clones trying to execute two Jedi. For some, it didn’t work out very well. Depa Billaba let her guard down long enough for Caleb to try and make an escape, and she died as Caleb went on the run. Then she got shot about a thousand times in the back just to make sure she was dead. Then, the rest of the issue was Kanan eluding the Clones, and going into Hyperspace. He plotted a course for Corusant, and got the news from Obi-Wan to not be near Corusant just a little too late, got out of Hyperspace and in the middle of a bunch of X-Wing prototypes from the Empire.

Kanan was one of the more likable, and more important, characters to come out of Star Wars Rebels. Seeing him get his own series to convey his seemingly large amount of back story was smart, because it would have gotten lost if the writers decided to shoehorn this extra plot into the show. Would it be nice to see it in motion? Of course it would. I’m not one to expect a lot when it comes to tie-ins, and this prints money when it comes to Star Wars fans.

Before Star Wars Rebels, there has been sparse amounts of canon back story to show what was going on, and there wasn’t a lot of Jedi death shown in Episode III: Revenge of the SithStar Wars Rebels, and it’s companion story Kanan – The Last Padawan, give us more than enough to sink our teeth into. This gives me a bit of hope as we inch closer to Star Wars Rebels Season 2, and crawl towards The Force Awakens.
