Comic Adaptation News: “Sweet Paprika” ; “Headlocked”
A new adult animated project inspired by the Image/DC comics property Paprika is currently in development with creator Mirka Andolfo making the announcement.
Sweet Paprika will be developed by Andolfo, Arancia Studio and Davide G.G. Caci, with Gabriele Pennacchioli (Love Death + Robots) on board as executive producer. Tomasso Triolo will write the screenplay. According to THR, the project centers around the relationship between the career-driven Paprika — the chief creative officer at a New York-based publisher — and Dill, a delivery boy whose casual naïveté makes him charming and confounding in equal measure to Paprika. To make matters more complicated, she’s a devil and he’s an angel.
More information about the project is expected to be released in the coming months.
Michael Kingston, creator of the long-running graphic novel series Headlocked, is in a run of interviews teasing that a new adult animated series inspired by his comic book of the same name have had varying levels of conversations that could potentially see it happen. In a new interview with Forbes, Michael says this:
“There have been conversations in the past,”…I think an animated series would be great – just because when you film live wrestling, all the contact takes a toll. If we could do it as a cartoon – like a late-night cartoon for adults – we could get real wrestlers to do the voices, to bring a little star power to it.”
Our Take
An adult animated series inspired pro-wrestling could be coming at a perfect time. WWE Network and Adult Swim have both had brushes with the squared circle, but with AEW Wrestling gaining momentum against a long-tired WWE product, an appetite could be developed for one such an endeavor. Moreover, VICE, Netflix, and FOX Sports have seen success in producing original content inspired by pro wrestling, so this could work!
