Comic Review: RWBY/Justice League #7

Overview

Blake, Yang, and Clark/Superman come face-to-face with a trident-wielding boy who can command sea life while searching the harbor. But is the princely boy the one taking control of people all over Remnant? What is his mysterious connection to Clark?

Our Take

Written once again by Marguerite Bennett but this time with art from an individual who goes by the name of “Aneke”. The issue’s premise itself is beyond blatant that Yang, Blake, and Clark/Superman would encounter DC’s one and only Aquaman. Though, unlike the most recent hyper-masculine rendition that Jason Momoa popularize. This is somewhat a more traditional take with him as a fish Faunus which makes sense within the RWBY Universe. I do find it odd that the artist felt the need to give him a purple streak in his hair even though Aquaman is usually synonymous with the colors, orange, yellow, and green.

The plot remains itself consistent while further establishing that Aquaman and Clark actually know each other within this universe which helps ease the potential fight. But it isn’t subtle about the LGBTQ undertones it’s going for with the “Bumblebee” shipping with Yang calling Aquaman out for trying to flirt with Blake. They even establish how Superman’s “Semblance” works which correlate to his powers of the Yellow Sun thereby putting him at a disadvantage at night time.

Overall despite the misleading cover, the plot continues its trend of moving things forward with another member added to RWBY’s rendition of the Justice League. As of right now, it remains to be seen who will pop up at this point, but I look forward to finding out the next issue!
