Comic Review: RWBY #7 Yang: Part two Magic Words

Upon finding an old note she was using as a bookmark for about year, Yang reminisces about an adventure she had with Blake during their time at Beacon Academy.

Our Take

Given that this is a continuation to Yang’s chapter 1 within her retconned portion of the story, Yang looks back at a happier simpler time with the rest of her Team Rwby, most notably her time with Blake as she manages to befriend an introvert in a montage of adventures that I don’t think we’re ever in the show, but I guess that’s how retcons work. There is also subtle foreshadowing to a book Blake even speaks up that talks about a character within a book she’s read that kinda mirror’s her former ex-boyfriend/arch-nemesis Adam Taurus but thankfully that isn’t the focus.

There seems to be a running joke about Yang’s inability to help what she perceives as Blake’s fear of social interaction given her introverted nature that’s seemingly played for laughs when it ends with an adventure involving a saloon being blown to hell, but of course that also was a clever way to foreshadow the bond these two would further develop in Vol.6 when they both face their fears on both a figurative and literal level.

As usual, the comic team involved with this ongoing series writer Marguerite Bennette, colorist Arif Prianto and this time with artist involved Meghan Hetrick still manage to keep things consistent as this “in-between” story that takes place after Vol.3 but before Vol.4, as this plot’s only purpose is to somewhat give the readers & fans a glimpse into whatever bond her and Blake may have shared before the shit went down at Vol.3’s ending. Yang even learns to be considerate of Blake’s feelings and yet Blake is not only accepting of this but she gives Yang the lesson that she can’t always control & fix everything and that’s ok. The story also ends with a small hint of optimism for Yang despite the physical and psychological damage she’s still trying to break herself out of from the shit that also went down at her in Volume 3.

It’s easy to assume that the other two chapters will also be a “chapter 2” next for both Blake & Weiss within this current run by DC comics and I look forward to reading them when they come.
