Comic Review: Rick and Morty: Rick’s New Hat #5

Overview:

An ancient god, Nunzumel, had once gifted Rick with all his wisdom so that he could save the world. But what would you expect Rick Sanchez to do? He stabbed the powerful being directly in the brain and turned the universe into his playhouse.

Now, Nunzumel is acting out his revenge which started with getting Rick to put on a new hat that made him stupid. However, after Rick remembered the three laws of science, he is back and better than ever, baby! Only one thing, Nunzumel has kidnapped his Morty.

It is the final showdown. All the marbles. Rick versus an ancient god. And thankfully, he won’t have to do it alone as he unleashes all the Ricks that Nunzumel has previously defeated.

Our Take:

If you are a fan of Rick and Morty and have never read one of the franchise’s comic books, you are missing out. The graphic novel adaptations of everyone’s favourite animated series hold their own when it comes to navigating the wacky multiverse full of insane characters.

Thankfully, there couldn’t be a better place to start diving into the Rick and Morty literature universe than Rick and Morty: Rick’s New Hat. The five-part miniseries has already impressed up until now, with a unique story that integrates many of the best aspects of the animation. Old characters, plots, and themes all come back to haunt the genius and his grandson. Meanwhile, a new villain has stepped up to the plate to bring the undefeatable duo down once and for all.

Rick’s New Hat definitely tried something different by taking away the most defining feature of Rick Sanchez, his intelligence. This series boldly offered a glimpse at what Rick would be like without his high-calibre intellect. Thankfully, it didn’t last for too long, and by the conclusion of this series finale, Rick is more brilliant than ever. However, the true power was discovered when the genius realized there is more to him than smarts; he is also rebellious and partly insane.

Truthfully, this fifth and final issue of Rick and Morty: Rick’s New Hat was more of an action-packed conclusion to a story that already had most of its fun. A significant number of pages are dedicated to Rick’s final battle with Nunzumel. Anyone who has ever read the Death of Superman comics knows that action-packed comics don’t always translate to quality reading. However, there are enough jokes and references throughout this issue to make it entertaining.

Although this final issue in the miniseries is overflowing with confusing action, it does sufficiently wrap up an incredible collection. As a five-book series, Rick’s New Hat will be one of the more memorable adaptations that have come out in recent years. Additionally, a set-up for a sequel at the end leaves room for this plot to continue growing. And honestly, if there was one Rick and Morty series to expand upon, there couldn’t be a better option. Hopefully, we will hear news of a second part soon.
