Comic Review: Rick and Morty Presents: Jerryboree #1

Overview:

The daycare for Jerrys, Jerryboree, is hosting a special field trip for all of their guests.  A busload of Jerrys gets dropped off at Blips and Chitz for a whole day in the intergalactic arcade.

As expected, chaos ensues.

Jerry X-198 has an especially difficult time.  Each game that he plays is not quite what he expects.  Most of them conclude with him in pain or humiliation.  That is until he discovers Conflict Conflict Resolution and wins the grand prize.

But things may get worse when a Jerry receives the top prize from Blips and Chitz, omnipotent power.

Our Take:

You never really know what to expect from the Rick and Morty Presents comic series.  The collection of one-shots focuses on a different character or species each issue.  Through the collection, we have seen the lives and stories from across the Rick and Morty-verse including Jaguar, Birdperson, and most recently the Death Stalkers.  The only thread tying each of the issues together is the multiverse that they share.

Rick and Morty Presents: Jerryborree offers a much simpler story.  Gifting us with a whole issue of what would happen if a collection of Jerrys were let loose to the most fun place in the universe, Blips and Chitz.

Narrowing things down, we follow one specific Jerry, Jerry X-198, as he navigates his way through the massive arcade.  Of course, we know from the animated series that Blips and Chitz is full of unexpected games.  And Jerry is the perfect vessel of confusion and naivety to guide us.

Things never go right for Jerry, and it is no different in this comic.  Trying games like Gear Wars, Roy 3, and even the stand-up Fortune Teller, result in suffering for X-198.  Though it is pure madness and hilarity for the reader.

The best attempt at playing a game comes in the form of Grief Counsellor Taxi.  In which, Jerry is a cab driver and is able to offer some sage advice for his client.  Surprisingly, we learn some character background for X-198, including the fact that both of his children have died.

However, this fun little comic comes with a big finish.  As the foreshadowed ‘god pill’ that grants temporary omnipotent power to its holder ends up in our Jerry’s hands.  And he does not waste it.  With a reference to Marvel’s Scarlet Witch, Jerry goes mad with power.  Resulting in the most destructive wave ever brought on by a Jerry.

Not the most complex of comic books, this issue was all about fun.  And it paid off with a rewarding dose of laughs and entertainment.

Conceptually, putting a hundred Jerrys into a Blips and Chitz and seeing what happens is a guaranteed win.  But the story that unfolds and the aftermath of the events take this comic over-the-top.

Quickly this book rises to the top of recommendations for Rick and Morty Presents issues.  The easy-read delivers one of the shows most lovable characters bumbling his way through his own rotten luck.  Anyone who enjoys the animated series is certain to love this comic.
