Comic Review: Rick and Morty #59

Overview (Spoilers Below):

“The Rickoning Part 4 of 5”

After Rick has carried out his tumultuous journey to save Morty from Peacock Jones, the family returns home. However, Morty’s brainwashing has fully kicked in, and he has one goal in mind, kill his grandfather. In the ultimate showdown, Rick and Morty go head-to-head, while Beth makes certain that Morty doesn’t end up dead. Thankfully, Rick has more than one tool in his kit for getting Morty to calm down.

But, just as things finally seem to be safe, the Council of Rick’s has one more surprise as they drop a bomb ready to destroy the universe into the garage.

“Likes and Follows”

Summer has recruited her grandfather to help her with her cyberbullies. Reluctant at first, Rick helps in the best way that he knows how.  Things don’t end the way Summer intended, but Rick may be more effective at helping than predicted.

Our Take:

It’s the penultimate Rick and Morty self-titled comic book. Just one more issue before this series is done. We can save the crying for next month because that is going to be a hard pill to swallow. For now, we can celebrate a great comic that has given us plenty of amazing stories.

And, this one is no different.

One thing that is excellent about this series that I have never acknowledged is the brilliant narrator.  You would expect Rick or Morty to be the ones to break the fourth wall and update us on past events when a new issue comes out. But the comic went a different direction utilizing fan-favourite character Mr. Poopy Butthole, ooh wee. The unique player makes continuations entertaining, if only for the couple panels of exposition.  Just an example of the fun choices that this comic series has made through the years.

Now, let’s get to the brass tacks, as this was one heck of an issue. Typically, in a long saga like this five-parter, none of the issues can hold up on their own. They depend on the other books to fill the gaps and make the story cohesive. However, this five-part run has played by its own rules. Each of the additions has had their own theme, plot, and characters to help them stand on their own. Whether it involved Rick going to a Rick and Morty convention, or the Ball Fondlers making their appearance. The ongoing plot has made this brilliant comic even better. Just in time to end.

Of course, the major theme of this issue is Rick versus Morty. The two titular characters go toe-to-toe, and it is better than you could hope for.  Besides using overpowered exoskeleton, Rick also plays dirty. But, Morty manages to hold his own and get a few good shots in on his grandfather.  Even after the brainwashing wears off, Morty continues to give Rick a few punches. A final lash out from all the shit that Rick puts Morty and the family through. If you ever wanted to see Morty give his grandfather an excellent punch to the face, you’re going to want to read this comic.

The closer we get to Rick and Morty comics ending, the more bittersweet this gets. These books have provided so much incredible content, especially while the show was on hiatus, and now it’s leaving. Then, you read great issues like this one, and it’s like “what will we do when it’s gone?” Thankfully, there will be sixty back issues to go back and read. And, when we look back at the series as a whole, this significant conclusion will be one of the best memories. I mean, we did get to see Morty punch Rick in the face.
