Comic Review: Rick and Morty #56

Overview:

The Rickoning (Part 1 of 5)

Peacock Jones is stewing over his multiple defeats at the hands of Rick Sanchez. However, he has learned a new trick in defeating the nefarious genius, separate him from his Morty.

Meanwhile, Morty is sick of feeling defenceless and forces Rick to help him gear up for future adventures. He ends up securing one of the greatest exoskeletons in the multiverse, the Hollaluog. Using the suit to his advantage, Morty becomes bored with being overpowered. He gives it up, much to Rick’s anger, who lashes out and calls Morty dumb. Morty attempts to secure a Mega Seed, but not without running into Peacock Jones.

Unfortunately, there is another sinister group manipulating Peacock’s plan from the shadows. The Illumirick is about to unleash their ultimate plan.

Bitty Crittys

Beth, Summer, and Morty are addicted to their new mobile game, Bitty Crittys. Sick of them being on their phones all of the time, Rick agrees to make real-life versions of the monsters in the game. However, things get out of hand when he makes them transform to quickly. Soon, everything is being overrun with Bitty Crittys.

Our Take:

Rick and Morty is back on the air finally after an extended wait. However, fans of the comic books know the stories never truly ended. With the original content available again, it left many of us wondering what the comic title would do to stay relevant. Well, it turns out that they are revisiting the story that has been occurring since way back in issue #11. Peacock Jones is back for more, this time influenced by those more powerful than he is. And, that also means we are in for a new ongoing saga. This five-part series kicks off in this issue and is sure to take us to some epic places.

Last we saw Peacock Jones he had formed a supervillain team to take down Rick Sanchez finally. Of course, we know what happens to anybody on Rick’s bad side. He lost in terrible fashion. And, beyond that, he has lost everything and been humiliated beyond repair. Thankfully, there is no name more well-known through the galaxies than Rick Sanchez and gaining allies in his battle won’t be that difficult.

This should be a crazy series. Peacock Jones is going to be just a small player compared to the Illumirick. This is going beyond simple vendettas and entering the all-out war between Rick’s. Their main goal is to kill our main Rick, but for what purpose is yet to be determined. Either way, there is no more formidable of a foe for Rick then himself.

This issue also touches on the long-time insecurities of Morty. Used as a decoy or distraction by Rick more often than not, Morty finally demands some sort of self-defence. And, there is something different about this main Rick that he genuinely cares about his Morty. Therefore he goes all out when it comes to making him happy. It actually cost him sincerely, as he gave up a picture of him and Morty when his grandson was a baby. Something I am confident will be coming back around in the future of this 5-part series.

The other story, “Bitty Crittys” was quick and interesting. A parody on the Pokemon Go craze that took over the world a couple of summers ago, the Smiths are into their own mobile game. Rick would think the game is stupid, but who knew he could create life and bring these monsters to the real world. What happens next, I have no idea. This story ends abruptly with the world in chaos, and there is no promise that the story will ever be touched on again.

This issue was a lot of set up. Putting pieces in place and setting the stage. Even with that, they still managed to squeeze in some great Rick and Morty humour. Primarily when Rick uses Morty as his own personal shield. Mostly, I am interested in seeing where this series is going to take us. Right now is an excellent time to get on board with this comic. Even if you haven’t read some of the previous stories that interconnect with this one, they aren’t necessary for this next saga. Let’s just hope our Rick and Morty make it out of this one.
