Comic Review: Rick and Morty #40
Sure, Pickle Rick is great, but have you tried Plumbus Rick?
Overview:
Rick and Morty join the last man standing, battle royal. The prize is a stay at the 5-star Balls Deep Resort. In order to catch their prey, Rick uses the transformatron and makes appearances as everything from Butter Churn Rick to Cactus Rick to Plumbus Rick. There’s a lot more, like a full montage. The cost of winning may be too much for Morty and Rick’s motives are never what they first seem.
In a second story, Fancy Rick is on trial at the court of Morty’s for trying to shave Morty’s head without consent. When Rick realizes what Fancy Rick is up to things take a turn. Fancy Rick is genetically brewing a mixture of Rick’s and Morty’s to create the ultimate being. After Rick and Morty defeat Fancy Rick they must figure out what to do with the beast.
Our Take:
It’s Plumbus Rick! Whatever is that? Has anyone actually figured out what a plumbus is yet? Because I would love to know. For fans of Pickle Rick are going to eat this comic up. First off, there is an extreme amount of unnecessary violence which puts any Rick and Morty story over the top. If that’s not great enough for you, Rick transforms into an unimaginable amount of inanimate objects and gives us that slick catchphrase through all of them. “Weeble Wobble Rick!”
The whole Fortnite/Hunger Games plot is so fitting for a Rick and Morty story. Honestly, could you imagine Rick really passing that opportunity up? And they handle it so slickly, by handily taking care of murder after murder. Really, this is just one of those ridiculous, laugh the whole way through, classic Rick and Morty stories.
The other story, however, that one was a bit confusing. I’m not sure if it was paced to quickly or it just plain doesn’t make sense. Fancy Rick is a great villain, but I would like to know more about how and why he is making this super-being. And the way it ended left me with more questions than none. Considering this story didn’t even offer any good humour I am kind of wondering why it happened at all, and why I read it.
So, what do I do? The main story is an enjoyable foray into death and intimate objects being Rick-i-fied. But, that second story left me scratching my head. Well, I guess, I am going to ignore that second piece because the first was just that good. And, honestly, you should pick this book up for that read alone. I would love to see the show take Rick and Morty into a battle royal, this comic keeps on delivering great material.
Hi Ashley, thank you so much for reading and we love the feedback.
