Comic Review: Rick and Morty #38

Oh geez, this whole v-v-vampire thing got out of hand.

Overview:

In the last issue of Rick and Morty, Morty and Summer were kidnapped by the covenant of the former Coach Feratu. Morty had fallen to desire and became a vampire while Summer was still missing. Now, Rick is geared up and ready to take on a whole army of undead with Jerry and Beth by his side. But, as they finally face-off against the leader, Bartok, they discover Summer is better than okay, she has influenced her teenage drama on the goth-vampires.

Additionally, in a short story, Morty is listening to podcast from another dimension. Morty Cast is run by Radio Morty to keep up on the latest Morty news. Unfortunately, Raunchy Radio Rick has bought the network and has other plans.

Our Take:

In a throwback to the episode “Big Trouble in Little Sanchez,” this two-issue arc was a nice look at where that vampire storyline could have gone. Rick and Morty is full of loose ends and what if’s, so it is great to have a comic that can fill in those holes. It is a great chance to get some of your questions answered while continuing with the signature humour.

At the end of the last issue, Rick promised that #38 would be “offfff the chaaaaain!” If anything was off the chain in this issue it was Rick. It is always awesome seeing these characters turn into action stars suddenly, and Rick manhandles at least a hundred vampires single handily. It was also sweet to read some more of Jerry and his dynamic in the family. I love Jerry, he’s such a disappointment.

The whole Summer plot confused me a bit. Was she supposed to be influencing the goth-vampires into overthrowing the establishment? Because I didn’t really get that. It felt more thrown in there to show that she was okay. That whole story could have been expanded upon to make it more clear.

The Morty Cast story was full of hilarious jokes. It is always a crack up when we see Ricks and Mortys from other dimensions. If Radio Marty wasn’t good enough for you, Zoo Crew Morty or Handsy Morty are sure to hit your funny bone. While it was a fun ride, this story kind of fizzled off. But, I am okay with it, it’s like when you get mini-commercials on the short which this issue has one of as well.

This was my first taste of Rick and Morty comics and I loved it. I fully intend on catching up on all of the back issues. The writers are doing a great job of transferring the outrageous humour of the show into another media. Even the voices sound clear in your head like you’re watching an episode. I would recommend that anyone who is struggling with the wait for season three should look to these books to feed their cravings.
