Comic-Con@Home: Duncanville Q&A and Season 2 Clip

It feels like it has been 23 years now, what with everything that has happened since, but Duncanville had its premiere on Fox back in February 2020. Despite the outside world falling apart, the series managed to find its legs and get signed up for a sophomore season.

Duncanville follows the misadventures of teenage boy, Duncan (Amy Poehler) and his dysfunctional family. The show stays true to the family-friendly network television synonymous with Animation Domination from Fox. However, changes the game with a powerful woman at the helm of the family, and focusing on the more dispassionate perspective of its star teenager.

San Diego Comic-Con would have been Duncanville’s first chance to share its insights with fans on the ground floor. Also, it would have been superstar Amy Poehler’s first appearance at the big show.

Thankfully, the innovative Comic-Con@Home has brought Poehler and her show-mates to our fingertips with a special virtual panel.

In attendance for the online showcase co-creators, Mike and Julie Scully (The Simpsons) join Amy Poehler. The all-star crew of voice talents also join the discussion including Ty Burrell (Modern Family), Riki Lindhome (Garfunkel and Oates), Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation), Betsy Sodaro (Trolls World Tour), Joy Osmanski (Allen Gregory), Yassir Lester (Champions), and rapper Wiz Khalifa.

Opening things up for the panel is an exclusive clip of the upcoming second season. Granted, the clip is from a carryover episode that never made it to air in season one. However, it is the first content that we have seen for what the series has planned going forward.

The clip is from an episode titled “Annie Oakie” which features Annie getting nominated for a city award and how the family rallies behind her. A surprise Easter Egg from the short clip also introduces the idea that Duncanville lives in the same universe as Parks and Recreation, having a cameo appearance from Leslie Knope.

After the entertaining teaser, moderator Lynette Rice quizzes the cast and crew of Duncanville on aspects of season one, and what fans may have to look forward to in future episodes.

The con seems to be happening at an ideal time for the stars, as they are planning their first reading of the new batch of episodes in the next week or two. With recording equipment installed at each of their homes, the talent behind Duncanville has quickly adapted to a world in quarantine.

The Scully’s were pretty open about future plots that will be happening within the show. Admittedly, they are steering clear of current events and won’t be touching on the pandemic or the state of democracy in the US right now.

But, we will bear witness to the first summer that Duncan doesn’t have to attend summer school, which means that the family will be going on their first vacation. Also, Mike Scully promises to push the characters when Duncan says the one thing to his father that crosses the line.

For fans of the show and animation in general, there are a lot of tidbits shared about how Duncanville came to be, how the reaction to the first season feels, and how the stars of the show have adapted to their characters personalities. Whether that be Poehler’s insecurities about voicing a male character or Wiz Khalifa being naturally cool.

The main takeaway that fans can take from the first-ever Duncanville panel, is that everyone is excited to be a part of the show. There is a lot of attention going into making the show family-friendly while pushing the boundaries of what can be said on network television. Even Duncan is analyzed perfectly when they describe him as “passionately indifferent”.

Another season of Duncanville is sure to be exciting when the cast and creators are showing this much care and attention.

Duncanville season two will premiere in Spring of 2021.

The Duncanville virtual panel is available to watch for free on the Comic-Con@Home website or on YouTube.
