Comedy Central Attempts To Get Back In Game With Animated Shorts Program

Will it work?

It’s no secret that Comedy Central’s animated efforts in 2018 have largely been futile. Other than a handful of syndication deals, really the network only has the always reliable South Park as an example of an original animated series in which to showcase. Other than the recently announced development of Mall Town USA which hasn’t been picked up yet, news hasn’t released about anything Comedy Central has done in the animated space until now.

Comedy Central has announced they are taking a page out of the  Animated Shorts Program in looking for fresh faces to submit all styles and techniques of animation, including 2-D, digital 2-D, CG, stop-motion or mixed media. The initiative is to eventually sign a development deal with the producers that would help launch a series that could potentially take off much in the same way it did for Nickelodeon’s The Loud House which had a similar path to success.

That said, Comedy Central had launched a successful shorts initiative a couple of years ago called Trip Tank which spun-off Jeff & Some Aliens which was unexpectedly canceled after one excellent season. Will the same hold true for this new initiative?
