The pilot for Smiling Friends originally aired during Adult Swim’s 2019 April Fool’s Day stunt to massive fan reaction. On Adult Swim digital platforms, the pilot has generated 1.3M views and is the #1 most watched episode on AdultSwim.com since its release. Cusack’s first show with Adult Swim, YOLO: Crystal Fantasy regularly won the half-hour across ad-supported cable among all adult demos. Additionally, it beat the key late-night competition by mostly double and triple digits among young adult demos.

Network: Netflix

Netflix is getting into Shivering Truth territory. After decimating each of our “Top Ten” lists, the streamer that is destroying the competition on amount of content is looking as though 2022 could be a repeat year.

From the leading voices in independent stop motion animation – Emma de Swaef & Marc Roels, Niki Lindroth von Bahr and Paloma Baeza – this Netflix special centers on a house and the three surreal tales of the individuals who made it their home.

The Legend of Vox Machina

Premieres: January 28th

Network: Amazon Prime

After massive COVID-related delays, Amazon Prime’s long-awaited D&D-inspired series is about to hit…hard. When it comes to animated series, Amazon Prime doesn’t get a bunch, but when they pick a show it always seems to hit. Titmouse animates this animated drama that looks like it wants to finally challenge Netflix in the adaptation department, this should be lethal.

Krapopolis

Network: FOX

The year 2022 could go down as a year in which TV channels make a comeback as a destination spot for adult animation. Comedy Central, Adult Swim, and now FOX are all coming in with premieres this year with FOX striking first with a new one called Krapopolis.

Emmy Award nominee Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”), Richard Ayoade (“The IT Crowd”), Matt Berry (“What We Do in The Shadows”), Pam Murphy (“Mapleworth Murders”) and Duncan Trussell (“The Midnight Gospel”) have joined the voice cast of KRAPOPOLIS, FOX’s new animated comedy set in mythical ancient Greece, from Emmy Award-winning creator Dan Harmon (“Rick and Morty,” “Community”)

KRAPOPOLIS centers on a flawed family of humans, gods and monsters that tries to run one of the world’s first cities without killing each other. KRAPOPOLIS will serve as the first-ever animated series curated entirely on the Blockchain, as FOX and Bento Box enter the NFT business. The company will launch a dedicated marketplace for KRAPOPOLIS that will curate and sell digital goods, ranging from NFTs of one-of-a-kind character and background art and GIFs, as well as tokens that provide exclusive social experiences to engage and reward super fans.  An NFT of the KRAPOPOLIS cast image is minted on the Eluvio content blockchain with token metadata.

The Boondocks

Premieres: TBA 2022

Network: HBO MAX

It’s been 84 years since the reboot for the classic Adult Swim series The Boondocks was announced for a reboot, but creator Aaron McGruder assures us it’s coming this year. A 50-minute special will kick off a 20-episode order in a year that is in desperate need of a kick in the ass as it pertains to content not trying to be PC.

The new Boondocks follows the adventures of self-proclaimed “Civil Rights Legend” Robert “Granddad” Freeman, and his two rambunctious grandsons Huey and Riley. The family has recently moved to an idyllic community in suburban Maryland only to see it taken over by the tyrannical Uncle Ruckus and his bizarre neo-fascist regime. Life under Ruckus turns out to be an everyday struggle to survive.

Washingtonia

Premieres: TBA 2022

Network: Comedy Central

Washingtonia looks more like the offspring of Showtime’s Our Cartoon President, complete with returning stars like James Adomian who reprises his role as Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, and a number of other voices. SNL’er James Austin Johnson is Donald Trump with other big name stars coming on board like Gary Cole, Thomas Lennon, Stephen Colbert, Andy Daly, Jon Glaser, Zach Cherry, and John Viener. The trailer shows that the feature film takes a more fantastical approach to political humor.

Kinda looking like a cross between Tooning Out The News, and Fisher Price’s Little People, Fairview is political comedy for those who have caught one of many Comedy Central’s South Park marathons that air on Wednesday Nights.

Royal Crackers

Premieres: TBA 2022

Network: Adult Swim

Royal Crackers is a half-hour animated series that follows two brothers: Stebe, a family man with a wife and child; and Theo Jr., a single, bass guitar player trying to relive his glory days. Together they live in their comatose father’s house waiting for him to die (he never does) so they can inherit his cracker company empire. Royal Crackers is created by Ruiz who also serves as executive producer along with Seth Cohen. The series is produced by Titmouse and will premiere on Adult Swim in 2022.

Ruiz first started creating web animation at 12 years-old and was the first writer to emerge from the Fox/20th Joint Inkubation Program with a completed pilot. He was also listed in The New York Times as one of 5 rising animators to watch, which also included Rebecca Sugar and Justin Roiland. Ruiz previously created and developed original animated content for Super Deluxe and Fox.

Premieres: TBA 2022

Network: Netflix

When Kid Cudi showcased the first teaser for Netflix’s Entergalactic, we got a weird and foreboding look at what he’s been cooking up with Kenya Barris. In what is supposed to be an animated adaptation of Cudi’s album of the same title, it would be wise to recall that Cleveland, Ohio’s Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi is a solid actor who has been seen in such big productions as Don’t Look Up, Comedy Bang! Bang!, and numerous voice roles. Watch out, this could be a sleeper.

Of all the teased upon Adult Swim social spin-off series coming, Alabama Jackson and Aquadonk Side Pieces appear to be the closest to premiering first with Aqua most likely being the first given that the show got a first-look at Adult Swim Festival. This series follows the spin-offs and villains first introduced in Aqua Teen like the Mooninites, The Plutonians, MC Pee Pants, The Frat Aliens, Happy Time Harry, Handbanana and The Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past.
