Bubbleblabber IE Review: Ends Meet S1 Ep7

Beezer and the black dog.

Overview (Spoilers Below):

This episode opens with Beezer in the social welfare office, offering an accurate portrayal of the tribulations of dealing with the welfare system’s Vogon-like penchant for form-filling. This is, however, not the source of his misery.

At the social welfare office, Beezer encounters a lady named Robyn, and she agrees to go for a few cans with him. Beezer is in good spirits as he gets ready at home. He meets up with Robyn and they bond over a mutual fondness for cheap drink and disdain for tertiary education, as they ponder on the futility of life.

The best joke of the episode is when Robyn reveals that she is not on unemployment benefit, and Beezer leaps to the conclusion that she is a honey trap set by the social welfare – presumably to investigate benefit fraud. He is, unsurprisingly, incorrect – Robyn is on disability for mental health issues. Beezer does not understand, so she explains in layman’s terms what depression and anxiety are.

Beezer is then convinced that he has depression, and tries to explain this to Sean Og and Tony, before going to see a doctor. She agrees that he has depression, and explains that he needs to take some medication, see a psychiatrist, and take better care of himself and that even then it’s not an issue that will go away.

This news does not help matters, and Beezer plans to run away at night and texts Robyn who comes to meet him because she is worried. She explains that running away is not the answer and that Beezer needs to try to manage his depression. Beezer returns home and mopes to Tony, who is very understanding, but tells Beezer he will just have to get on with things.

The episode ends with Beezer in a happy place, but it will only be a matter of time before life makes him miserable again.

Our Take:

This week’s big topic for the show to address was depression. If you are in search of an animated short to introduce you to the idea of depression – this is the episode for you. If you are wondering if you have depression, and are looking for a push to go and see a medical professional, this could be what you need. If you suffer from depression, and it would make you feel better to see this addressed in cartoon form, you’ll enjoy this. If you are looking for something light and entertaining to lift your spirits – this probably isn’t it. But that’s fine.
