Bubble UK Review: Sam Sweetmilk Kickstarter Pilot

It’s hard to know which Kickstarters should you donate to when there’s so many to choose from,. I’m going to help you decide today by looking at a new animated project, Sam Sweetmilk.

In my position as imperial overlord an animation blogger I get sent many Kickstarters to review and often  films that are little more than works in progress. I would love to promote all the crowdfunding projects I am asked to mention or post but I simply don’t have the time and, I find my self being too honest: would you rather I enjoy your project and embrace it full on or would you just be happy with another retweet by someone who hasn’t even completely explored your proposal? I am going to take a good look at a new Kickstarter because for once I wanted to promote a project that was a little closer to home, today I’m looking at Sam Sweetmilk, a would be animated series by British animator Jason Lee Weight.

Backing animation projects can be hit and miss, unless you have a huge name involved people are unlikely to take a risk with something if they can’t visualise the finished product. we may be happy to throw record amounts of money for a Goon show-reel because, well, because it’s the fricking Goon, but we’re less likely to support a project based on a character we have never heard of. Thankfully the team behind Sam Sweetmilk have made a 25 minute pilot, a work in progress with a mix of finished animation and animatics, for us to better understand what it is we’re backing.

Sam Sweetmilk
Described as ” A comedy in the vein of Hitchiker’s Guide, Adventure Time and Archer“, Sam Sweetmilk follows the exploits of an amnesiac star-ship captain, his Robot and the young alien heiress they have agreed to help; Vela. Highlighting the importance of interpersonal relations in the vastness of space, Sam Sweetmilk tells the story of a man who may be the last human alive and unfortunately he’s a bit of an arrogant sociopath.

The pilot contains only four minutes of finished animation but they are a great four minutes. The animation is stylish and clean, with attractive character designs and sumptuous backgrounds of fluid lines and shiny white surfaces, the voice overs are top notch too. The show cites Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Cowboy Bebop, as two of its influences and touches of these .two shows are apparent in many scenes.

I am intrigued by Sam Sweetmilk and hope it can be finished, I would definitely watch this if it became a series. I suggest you head on over to the Kickstarter page to see if any of the pledge rewards take your fancy, I hope we get the opportunity to see where Sam Sweetmilk goes next.
