Bubble IE Review: Ends Meet S1 Ep12

The last shot.

Overview: On an uncharacteristically sunny day (it is Ireland after all), Tony asks Sean Og and Beezer to go to Bray with him to commemorate his father’s birthday anniversary. After some whining, they finally agree to go. There is some idle prattle and planning on the train, and then they reach the beach.
Tony wants to climb Bray Head in memory of the trips he used to take with his father when he was younger. Beezer and Sean Og, despite their earlier misgivings, play around on the beach, hoping vainly for ice cream. Eventually, however, Tony and the other two wander up the hill, unaccustomed to exercise though they are, so that Tony can write his father’s name on the cross there. At the top, Tony is hassled by some local youths who are unwilling to let him enter “their space” until Beezer steps in and sees them off so that Tony can graffiti the statue. Then Beezer and Sean Og promise to keep the graffiti thereafter Tony has died.

Our Take: This episode is a little poignant – Tony is clearly still missing his father, while Beezer and Sean Og seem oblivious to this – and indeed to the possibility that they may some day feel this way about Tony – though they are clearly aware that Tony is getting on in years, given his bad hip and their jokes about his impending demise, they still seem largely selfish in their interactions with him (though this selfishness is, of course, a running theme throughout the series – or, if not a theme, then at least a very clear personality trait). There is a marked contrast between Tony’s generation and the generations of cretins that appear to be coming afterward. True to form, there are no funny jokes in this episode, but on the upside, this is the finale of this show, which surely deserves a point or two.
