BUBBLE CAN Review: The Stanley Dynamic “The Stanley Wild Weekend”

It’s never easy to say good-bye, even if you know it’s for a little while. Last night the season finale of The Stanley Dynamic aired on YTV. Even though the show has aired on and off again over the course of the last year, everything we’ve seen up until this point has actually all been part of it’s first season. And what a way to go! Michael Gross returned last night to reprise his role as grandpa and we learn that Doop’s family may be larger than expected. How was the season finale? Read on to find out!

In The Stanley Wild Weekend “The weekend features the boys heading out to camp while mom and Lori watch a scary movie.

The finale was pretty good! It’s nice to see the season wrap up with an episode about family bonding time, even grandpa came back! This episode is really about grandpa trying to teach the kids (and dad) how to toughen up and take care of yourself in the wilderness, but the kids (and dad) are hesitant to let go of the things that make them comfortable.

This episode feels larger in scale from the rest. They’ve built a pretty compelling forest set that gives the episode a sense of adventure and scale. They could have done what some other shows do when they want to do a camping episode and just stick them in the backyard with a tent, but they went the extra mile to give you as close to the real thing as possible. They even had a real bear cub!

Dad, Grandpa, and Larry all get lost in the woods while Luke is left back at camp. While grandpa and dad are constantly on their toes, it’s actually Larry who keeps his composure and finds a way out of the pickle. While there was a lot going on, I think enough was shown that Larry’s arc in this episode made sense. There is a lot of suspense but the episode holds on to it’s lightheartedness.

Mom and Lori’s story was a lot more simple, but still pretty fun. After watching a scary movie the girls are scared and decide to blast loud music and turn on all the lights. This gets the attention of their neighbor, Bill. There are a few things in this story that don’t make much sense to me. Firstly, why would dad throw a rock through Bill’s window? It’s funny in retrospect, but at the time I wasn’t sure what dad was doing until the scene had come to an end. Also, why would Bill hide behind the counter when Lori and mom came home from checking outside? He was supposed to be keeping an eye out for them. Maybe being in the kitchen would come across pretty creepy in the middle of the night, but I think that’s something that could be easily explained.  Still a lot of funny moments though.

Overall, this was a great ending for the first season of The Stanley Dynamic. It brought something new to the table. If season two ends up being anything like the first, I think we have a lot of fun to look forward to.
