Bob’s Burgers Creator Loren Bouchard Talks New Comic with Westfield Comics

Bob’s Burgers mastermind Loren Bouchard recently chatted about the show and its new comic with Roger Ash of the Westfield Comics Blog.

Bouchard discussed a few key questions and topics in the brief Q&A, the first of which involved the differences between doing a TV show and a print publication. “There’s a very, very important part of the show that we count on almost every moment,” he said. “That is the sound – the voices of the actors, the texture of the sound effects, and the powerful spell of music.” But with the move to print, the sound is lost. However, Bouchard had a plan to still capture it. “We decided, in the end, to trust that if we write to the voice, then the reader will hear the voice – that sound still exists – it just exists inside the reader’s head.” They even included songs in the issues, so fans can sing like they’re a character on the show. Except real, and probably in a worse voice.

Another slight difference: instead of the usual type of Bob’s story, the comics will actually “revolve around the fantasies and secret writings of the characters,” Bouchard said. “Nothing can be not true in a fantasy!” I think I sense more erotic friend fiction in our future.

But this isn’t a chance to use material too hot for TV, Loren explained. “We’re not trying to go around standards and practices. There isn’t much that we’ve wanted to do that they haven’t let us.”

Well, maybe there’s at least one exception. “Once we wanted to say ‘tip of your ding dong,’” he said. “And they said you can’t say ‘tip of your ding dong,’ but you can say ‘dingo dong.’ Because that’s totally the same thing, right?

Only time will tell if fans of the show end up being fans of the comics. Bouchard is hopeful the jokes and general feel will translate, and is looking forward to the result.

(By the way, if you missed it, we previously talked about the comics with the voice of Tina, Dan Mintz. However, Dan had only seen the actual comic during my interview with him, when he was clearly checking them out while supposedly also paying attention to my interview. However, he was awesome enough to answer everything else I asked. Check that out here, here, and in Issue #3 here.)
