Blu-Ray/DVD Review: Red vs. Blue Season 13

If you watched season 13 of Rooster Teeth’s Red vs. Blue (or at least read my reviews), you probably don’t need any convincing to buy the home release. The 20-episode season was absolutely phenomenal, and anything else they can cram onto the two-disc, Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack should only make it better.

So, let’s see what we got.

For starters, “Leaving Chorus” is an in-depth look behind the creation of seasons 11 through 13 of RvB, featuring interviews with Miles Luna, Bernie Burns, and Matt Hullum. Luna was totally frank with the audience regarding the conception of the plotlines and his experience going from intern to season director. For those looking for information on the actual production of the episodes, the guys also did “Evolution of an Episode,” a ten-minute segment showcasing just that.

Additionally, “The Art of Chorus” gives us a glance into the character & set design specifically, with “Motion-Capture Animation” showing the new animation technique used in this season. “The Music of RvB” is pretty self explanatory and “Very Scary Mercenaries” delves into the bad guys of the show.

Oddly, the bonus features also contain outtakes, which is something not often seen for cartoon shows – especially when it’s not live-action shots of the voice actors, but instead voice-over goofs with associated animations. Most of these clips feature someone messing around, and the others audibly losing it in the background. It’s quite hard not to laugh along with the guys. As far as behind the scenes segments go, these are all quite polished, and the coverage is outstanding.

The Blu-Ray/DVD also contains the PSAs for “Rehashed,” “The Sound of Stupid,” “Warning: Trigger Warnings,” and “The #1 Movie in the Galaxy: 2.” These were posted online in between new episodes of Red vs. Blue, so they’re not new, but obviously still needed to be included.

There are also trailers for the season, as well as “Lazer Team,” “RT shorts,” “Best of Animated Adventures,” “X-Ray & Vav,” and “RWBY Volume 2.” If you dig Rooster Teeth’s other shows, this might be useful. Otherwise, it’s a bit unrelated to RvB – aside from the first one.

And finally, for the nerdiest of nerds, viewers can listen to Miles Luna, Kyle Taylor, Koen Wooten, Josh Ornelas, and Dustin Matthews give commentary together on every episode. If you love dudes talking over your show – with information that’s actually useful and entertaining – then this is a gold mine.

To be honest, there really isn’t anything else I could imagine wanting out of a home release. The interview segments cover all the bases, and the rest of the bonus features round out a solid showing.

Whether you’re a super-fan or just someone who enjoyed one of the best seasons in Red vs. Blue history, you really must grab a copy of this for yourself.
