AnimeNYC 2018 Recap: Sentai Filmworks

Sentai Filmworks is one of the big licensing companies in the US, and they had a lot to say at AnimeNYC.

Made In Abyss made waves when the anime first debuted, both from its cutesy style to the dark story that contrasted with expectations. However, it isn’t just a show but is also expanding onto the big screen. The Made in Abyss compilation films, both parts one and two, will be coming to theaters in 2019! This will be a recap of the show’s happenings, and all the dramatic events will be available to see in the quiet dark of the movie theater. An exact date of the movie release has not yet been given to us yet, but full details will be given as 2019 looms closer.

The audience cheered when Girl’s Last Tour was announced, and for good reason; this is a small but well-loved story that has needed an English dub for a long time.  If you haven’t heard of it, it tells the stories of two young girls as soldiers stranded in a wasteland, not sure whether they should still be fighting, or what they need to do to survive. The voice actors of the two leads were announced, with Cat Thomas playing Chito/Chi and Juliet Simmons playing Yuuri. No specific release date has been given, but the dub will most likely debut sometime next year.

A smash hit series of Land of the Lustrous captured hearts everywhere with a finally fluid 3D animation and a compelling post-apocalyptic story. Now it is finally getting an English dub, and the panelists announced several members of the key cast. Avery Smithart with is the withdrawn Cinnabar, while Genevieve Simmons will be Bortz, a contrast to the much shyer Dia as portrayed by Savanna Menzel. The mysterious Adamant will be played by Brian Mathis, and last but most importantly, Sarah Wiedenheft will be our main character, Phos. No release date has been given so far.

Next is Mysteria Friends, which features two very familiar characters, especially if you’ve played Rage of Bahamut, or Cygames’ current extremely popular title, Granblue Fantasy. The series focuses on two young girls in a magical academy in Manaria, the mage Anne and the half-dragon Grea, and their budding friendship over time. Unlike our previous announcements, this has a concrete release date, and will be debuting in January 2019!

Lastly is the ever-popular Danmachi, which boasts a popular light novel series, an anime, and several spinoffs. This time, instead of imagining the adventures of Bell and Hestia from the text, there will be a chance to see a brand-new quest on the big screen. Arrow of Orion, a completely new story, will be coming soon, sure to excite Danmachi fans everywhere. The official theatrical release will be sometime in 2019, with more details to come soon.

Altogether, a very informative panel, filled with a lot of never-before-seen trailers. You could really feel the energy in the room, and I for one, can’t wait to catch several of these titles once they come out!
