Animated Episode Of “One Day At A Time” To Debut This Spring For POPtv

One Day At A Time executive producer Gloria Calderón Kellett also happens to be the wife of cartoonist Dave Kellett(How To Make Webcomics), so why wouldn’t they do more animated series together? I mean, it’s the only thing producing right now, it makes perfect sense!

Maybe this could help as PopTV has announced that this spring will premiere a new episode of One Day At A Time that will actually be an animated special.

In a statement to Deadline“In my 97 years, I’ve never known of a multicam comedy to animate a single episode as a special. Even this I get to experience,” said ODAAT executive producer Norman Lear.

Well, Norman, if you’re looking for examples Hot In Cleveland did a very good animated episode a couple of years back. The premise of the upcoming One Day At A Time episode follows Penelope’s conservative family paying a visit which, of course, leads to the politics discussion and the internal strife that is caused as a result (I’ll be curious if anyone questions the President’s recent bleach gurgling recommendations).

The episode will be produced by Smiley Guy Studios in Toronto known for series like Warren United, Corner Gas Animated, and Todd & The Pure Book of Evil.

Update 5/14: The premise of the episode entitled “The Politics Episode” centers around Penelope’s (Justina Machado) conservative cousin Estrellita (Melissa Fumero), Tia Mirtha (Gloria Estefan), and Tio Juanito (Lin-Manuel Miranda) coming to visit and with the impending election, they won’t be able to avoid fighting over politics.

The episode premieres June 16 at 9:30PM ET/PT only on POPtv.

Update 5/21: Cast and producers will take part in the 2020 ATX Festival to talk about the animated special.
