After Successful Kickstarter, “Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared” Return With Short #3, About Love

The Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared team smashed their Kickstarter goal back in June and have already started gifting the interwebs with new material. The latest puppet short is a dark take on what love is and who you should or shouldn’t accept it from.

Blink Fims’ UK pairing of Becky Sloan and Joseph Pelling first caught our attention back in 2011 with a puppet made short about creativity. Its stunning attention to detail and quirky charm, reminiscent of childhood naivete, bought the film over 20 million (!!!!) views on YouTube and had us usually cynical interwebber’s clamouring for more.

We had to wait two years for another dose of Don’t Hug Me’ puppet charm but it was worth the wait as the second film, Time, garnered over nine million hits on the video sharing platform. Spurred by their online success, Becky and Joseph initiated a Kickstarter  back at the start of Summer and by June had easily topped their £96,000 goal, enabling them to make a series of the popular franchise.

The first, and noticeably longer, film to come from their piles and piles of cash money wads is simply called Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared 3 and tackles the notion of love and the pitfalls of accepting advice about it from some random bug (it says he’s a baby pigeon but is more of a butterfly/bird hybrid) and his glassy-eyed mates. Their song should set off your inner freak alarms right away:

“Maybe I could hold your hand? And together we can understand about love. …Do you ever feel that life’s unfair? Because everybody hates you and no one cares. But if you follow me, maybe you will see that love is everywhere. … Your heart beats hard like a big love drum, calling for your special one. So be patient because your special one just might come. He’s made for her and she’s made for him. That’s the way it’s always been. And it’s perfect and it’s pure. And it’s protected with a ring. That’s the way that love always goes, like a flower it grows and grows. And it’s forever and forever. And we all worship our king, our king, our king. His name is Malcolm and he is the king of love. …This is your chance to start anew. All we’re asking you to do is change your name and clean your brain and forget about all you ever knew. …Now wear this ring and join the king and you will never be alone.” Hmmm thanks, but no thanks.
