Adult Swim Will Premiere “Final Space” Season Two Episodes Before TBS; Will Close Enough Follow?

I love how Adult Swim posts bumper information about series in the most innocuous moments. In this case, viewers (including myself) who were watching Final Space reruns on Adult Swim may take note of a new post from Adult Swim noting that new episodes of Final Space, beginning with season two, will actually premiere first on Adult Swim before they premiere on TBS. The second season of Final Space, all thirteen episodes, will premiere in 2019 for the network, all of which has been confirmed by show creator Olan Rogers.

Final Space, is an interstellar comedy created by independent filmmaker, actor, comedian and entrepreneur Olan Rogers. Final Space is being produced by Conan O’Brien’s Conaco and New Form, in association with Turner’s Studio T. Rogers and creative partner David Sacks will write the episodes, executive-producing them along with O’Brien, David Kissinger, Larry Sullivan and Jeff Ross of Conaco and Kathleen Grace, Melissa Schneider and Matt Hoklotubbe of New Form. Final Space is a serialized intergalactic space saga about an astronaut named Gary and his adorable, planet-destroying friend, Mooncake. The series will follow their adventures as they embark on a quest to unlock the mystery of “Final Space,” the place where the entire universe ends.

Our Take

Now, the more important development here is this could be an inclination on how we move forward with Close Enough, which is odd. The reason why this is odd is because American Dad is still premiering new episodes on TBS every week, but when the idea of a new animated franchise comes along, I guess the higher-ups just think Adult Swim is the better landing spot before syndicating franchises on it’s bigger networks. Close Enough was supposed to premiere last year and was the final series picked up by TBS in a now failed attempt at trying to get headstrong back into adult animation, leaving Adult Swim to reap the benefits with a slew of awesome new intellectual properties like The Shivering Truth, Hot Streets, and now Lazor Wulf which just had it’s premiere weekend.

With Adult Swim going 24-hours in Canada, rumors of a standalone streaming service that would be available as an add-on to VRV, and a renewed focus on differentiating it’s brand from the pack of wolves marking their territories with adult animation powerhouses of their own, Adult Swim’s poised to continue to make huge splashes within the next 18 months. Look out, because here comes Upfronts.
