English Dub Review: Chainsmoker Cat “Even in the Final Episode I’m Still Smoking Too”
Overview:
As her issues push the other residents to the edge, a worn-out Yani lashes out at her landlord, triggering the biggest brawl in the building’s history.
Our Take(Spoilers):
Somehow I’m both happy and sad that this show is over. It wasn’t the best, but it offered the occasional laugh, I suppose. Not gonna lie, this feels like the type of show that will end up with five seasons or something. I’m still trying to crack the formula for what makes a show get another season. I thought it was manga or light novel sales, but I’ve bought every High School DxD volume that’s come out, and still no new season on the horizon.
What I struggle with most in this show is that there aren’t any characters who are particularly good. Sure, I mean from a moral standpoint, but also just as a character. An evil character can still be a “good” character if they’re written well, and there aren’t really any good characters in this show on either end of the spectrum.
Yani’s sister, Imoko, and her classmate Yomuko might be the only good people outside of maybe the Ootani and Nishi. In the case of Ootani, he’s a pretty huge perv when it comes to beastfolk, but to be fair, he does try to keep it to the privacy of his own home, but his tenants mess with him a bit too much. In Nishi’s case, we don’t know a whole lot about her. She wants to be a comedian or actress, but that’s about all we know. She seems to be the most put-together of the group. I’ll get into the characters more in the season review because there’s a lot to unpack.
This episode had one of those typical season endings where a big thing happens and somehow all the characters we’ve met become involved in it. This gives us a send-off to all the characters in a weird sort of way. We even saw Yani’s mom at the doctor, and in a funny twist, she commented on now wanting that to be the last time the audience saw her in a funny fourth-wall break.
I could understand Yani being mad at the landlord for having a light workday after her rough day if she worked that hard every day. The problem is that she rarely works, and when she made more work for Ootani, it made her look like a huge asshole. That’s probably the best way to describe this show, a whole bunch of assholes.
