English Dub Review: Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You “Hanging Behind the Supermarket with You”

Overview

Poor Sasaki endures 15 grueling days at work and barely gets to see Tayama.

Our Take

Picking up from the previous two episodes, this installment continues to develop Sasaki and Yamada’s relationship while giving the manager more room to shine as an amusing and surprisingly perceptive wingwoman. Her bold attempt to get Sasaki to reveal his feelings leads to some of the episode’s funniest moments, while Yamada once again finds new ways to tease him. Their interactions feel increasingly natural, especially during their drawing session and quieter moments together, allowing their chemistry to grow without relying on forced romantic developments.

The rest of the proceedings does a great job showing just how miserable Sasaki’s work life can be. His exhausting two-week stretch of nonstop work gradually wears him down, with mounting responsibilities and an unsympathetic workplace leaving him completely drained. Thankfully, his brief interactions with Yamada provide some much-needed relief, and even their smallest exchanges carry a surprising amount of warmth. The animation remains solid, but the music continues to be one of the show’s biggest strengths, complementing its laid-back atmosphere with a distinct old-school feel. The voice acting also deserves credit, particularly during the episode’s more emotional moments.

Overall, this was another wonderfully low-key episode that proves the series doesn’t need dramatic developments to remain engaging. The humor, subtle romantic tension, and increasingly comfortable bond between Sasaki and Yamada make even ordinary conversations feel meaningful, while the contrast between his exhausting work life and their relaxing encounters gives the episode a nice balance. It may be a simple story about smoking, shopping, and two people gradually getting closer, but that simplicity is exactly what makes this series so damn charming.
