English Dub Review: Kaiju Girl Caramelise “A Gyaru and Lipstick”

A new school year puts Kuroe in class with an unexpected ally.

Our Take(Spoilers):

Have I mentioned how much I love this show yet? This show keeps going in the opposite direction with certain tropes, and I love it! Not only are Kuroe and Minami already a couple, but it seemed like Kuroe was going to have them pretend not to know each other at school. She wanted to make sure that he didn’t lose friends or followers. Minami, to his credit, didn’t want to go along with the plan, but when Kuroe kept insisting, he let her have her way.

Kuroe runs into Minami’s sister, and when she hears about how excited he was to be dating Kuroe, she has a change of heart. Plus, she promised to give him the lunch that he forgot. She caught up to him at school, and she held his hand. I loved that now the whole school knows that they’re a couple. Of course, this might lead to her getting bullied, but I loved seeing Kuroe having lunch with Minami and Manatsu. It’s nice to see that she’s come such a long way from being the loner to now having lunch with a friend and her boyfriend.

I think that someone else will join them soon, so let’s talk about Rairi. She is a gyaru, which, if you don’t know, is a girl who dresses rather flashy. They usually dye their hair blonde and paint their nails; we’ve had a few anime about them. Rairi is a gyaru, and she takes notice of Kuroe and helps her with some makeup and lipstick. After school, Kuroe gathers the courage to ask her to show her where she bought the lipstick she used.

While she was out with Rairi, something happened, and all of Rairi’s makeup got washed off. Now we learned why Rairi has a soft spot for Kuroe. When she doesn’t have any makeup on, she looks like a gorilla. Makeup can do a lot of things to change someone’s appearance, but it completely changes the shape of Rairi’s nose. I know it might seem odd to have this be an issue in a show where a girl transforms into a kaiju, but it was odd.

I think Rairi will be a great addition to the group, and I can’t wait to see how this new friendship blossoms. The only thing I would like to see now is one of them knowing Kuroe’s secret and still loving her despite it.
