English Dub Review: Grow Up Show: Sunflower Circus “A Sinister Legend Summons A Storm”
Overview:
Nanami Sumeragi’s team makes headlines with newspapers asking if they could surpass the “Lotus Circus.”
Our Take(Spoilers):
This episode was pretty dang funny. One thing this show does really well is animating the eyes of characters during funny moments. When they react in certain ways, it can make an already funny moment hilarious. When someone from Mizuka’s father’s circus days comes to visit, voiced by the amazing J. Michael Tatum no less, he puts the pressure on Mizuka. His name is Aiden Mitcher, and he was the catcher for Mizuka’s father, known as the Black Lotus. Now everyone in the circus knows that this legendary performer is Mizuka’s father.
Aiden coming to the Sunflower troupe is going to be huge, I think. For one, he’s going to take over Mizuka’s coaching duties. I also think that he’s going to be instrumental in whatever character development we get out of Mizuka. Which couldn’t come any sooner because I imagine we’re halfway through the end of this show. There’s more to the relationship between Mizuka and her father; I know it, and hopefully Aiden can be the one to fill in those gaps.
We also got a little bit of Svetlana’s backstory as we learned she’s also known as Yamada. This leads me to believe that she’s half-Russian and half-Japanese. She seemed very reluctant for anyone to know what her full name was, and I’m not quite sure why. Maybe she didn’t want that to shatter the mystique surrounding her.
Aiden is a lot harsher when it comes to his coaching than Mizuka. But he’s also rough on Mizuka; he calls her out for how poor a job she’s done when it comes to her coaching techniques. When Svetlana and Shizuku put on a less-than-stellar performance, he was the one to point out the flaws in their performance. Mizuka has been failing as a coach, and I’m surprised it took this long for someone to point it out. Sure, some of the other performers might now know better, but you would think the leader of the circus, Maria, would have an idea.
I am pretty excited about what Aiden’s arrival could mean for the rest of the season. Now Mizuka will have to be performing full-time with Ouka. Hopefully, they can bring out the best in each other. I know that Ouka is supposed to be the prodigy of the troupe but I think there’s more to Mizuka that we haven’t seen yet.
