English Dub Season Review: The Klutzy Class Monitor and the Girl with the Short Skirt Season One

Overview:

Sakuradaimon takes his role on the school’s Public Morals Committee very seriously. Every day, he dutifully checks students’ appearances at the school gate—most often scolding Kohinata, a rule-breaking girl with bright hair and a short skirt.

Our Take(Spoilers):

This show is hard to review because it was good and at some points it was even great. But there were some points, near the end, that made me lose interest. We’ll get into it as it goes, but the thing that was most enjoyable about this show was the voice talent.

I call Kohinata by her first name, Poem, and she is voiced by Alexis Tipton. Sakuradaimon is voiced by Adam Gibbs, which was awesome to hear because he doesn’t often do Crunchyroll dubs. If you watch HiDive a lot or any Sentai dubs, you hear him all the time, but not too many Crunchyroll shows. Alexis and Adam as the leads created magic with this show, and I loved the chemistry between their two characters. Our narrator was Ian Sinclair, and that made this show feel a lot like Kaguya-sama: Love is War. If you know me, you’ll know that I love that show, and it definitely added to my interest early on.

Like a lot of romance anime that has come out lately, we get the main couple getting together fairly early in the series. This got my hopes extremely high for the remainder of the season, but I was let down a bit. Sure, from a technical standpoint, Poem and Sakuradaimon were together, but during the school festival they got into a fight and ended up avoiding each other for most of the remaining three episodes. That left a bad taste in my mouth and makes me want a second season of this show more than many others.

A show like this thrives on its characters, and our leads weren’t the only winners. Everyone was a weirdo in some form or another. Poem’s friends have their own eccentricities, like Akina, who has an unhealthy obsession with another weirdo, Izubuchi, the school health attendant. Tasaki is a doujinshi writer who loves writing BL as so many do. Not to mention Tsukishima, who has a Frankenstein-like transformation whenever he’s not around books.

All in all, this was an okay show that started strong and had a disappointing finish. I hope we get a second season, but I don’t think it’s very likely at this point. I will be pleasantly surprised if we do because the main issue with this show was lost potential in my eyes. It started great, had a bit of a lull, and once it started to get interesting again, it was over.
