English Dub Review: Mushoku Tensei “Life Back at Home”
Overview:
Rudeus starts a new life with Roxy and Sylphiette, but not all his friends approve of his second marriage.
Our Take(Spoilers):
In this episode, we got a lot more time with Rudeus as he is now instead of flashbacks. Because of that, I have to say something I didn’t want to say. Madeleine Morris is a VA I adore; I love everything she’s in. But with what we saw of Rudeus in this episode, I don’t think she fits the voice of him anymore. He’s a man in his early twenties, and the way he looks just doesn’t fit the voice to me anymore. I don’t think they’ll change because, if I understand correctly, they only change the VA if the Japanese original does as well. The show is still great, and she’s still great, but for a review, I have to admit that it does take me out of it a tiny bit. I hope that it’s one of those things that I get used to.
Rudeus came back from his trip with a new wife, Roxy. He went to the school and introduced her to everyone he knew, but there was a slight problem. One, he didn’t introduce her as his wife, and two, he didn’t introduce her to Cliff. This is a bit of an issue because Cliff is a follower of the Millis church, which seems most similar to our version of Christianity. Having more than one wife is against the teachings of that faith, and so for Cliff it creates an issue where he is disappointed in his friend. Not only that, but Cliff witnessed Norn talking about how one day she hopes to find a love like Rudeus and Sylphie. Now that ideal of her brother is shattered, and I think that’s more of an issue than Cliff’s feelings.
Luckily for Rudeus, Cliff is a nice guy, and since Rudeus doesn’t follow the teachings of Millis, he forgives him. But this does change the family dynamics, and while a lot of people don’t like the slower pace of episodes like this, I find that they’re just as important. What makes this show so good is the characters, and if we don’t ever spend downtime with them, we won’t learn to care about them as much as we do. It’s been a long time since Rudeus and Roxy spent a lot of screen time together, so I’m personally looking forward to that. I just wish we got to see more Eris, but I’m sure her time will come.
