English Dub Review: Kaiju Girl Caramelise “The Kaiju Girl Appears in Tokyo”
Overview:
Outsider Kuroe begins experiencing the complex physiological changes of adolescence.
Our Take:
This show is right up my alley. Godzilla is one of my favorite franchises, and you all know how I feel about romance anime. So a show that combines kaiju and romance?! It’s clear that Kuroe’s transformation is supposed to look like Godzilla, and I love it. I hope that we get more from her kaiju transformation. What I mean is that I hope there end up being bad kaiju or something, and she has to transform to fight them, and obviously her love hormones got her to change, so romance will be involved too.
The voice cast is some people I’m unfamiliar with, but I enjoyed their performances in episode one. Nia Celeste voices Kuroe, and I loved how she brought life to the character. She definitely helped make Kuroe as endearing as she was in one episode. Her love interest, Arata, is voiced by Jacob Hopkins, and I’ve heard great things about him, so I’m looking forward to hearing more. Kuroe’s mother, Rinko, is voiced by the legend Luci Christian.
Speaking of Rinko, I’m not so sure she’s actually her “mother”. Rinko spends a lot of the episode talking to an egg about Kuroe, and I think that might have been how she was born. The characters and setup for this show intrigue me a lot. Arata was holding Kuroe’s hand when she started to change, and there’s no way he wasn’t able to tell that her hand was different. If you are holding a reptilian hand, that’s something you notice. So I’m hoping he knows that the kaiju is her, and that makes their relationship progress faster.
Not only are the characters and voice cast great, but it’s a beautifully animated show. This might sound weird, but Kuroe’s eyes in particular are animated in such a way that they’re fantastic to look at. Plus, the kaiju transformation looks so cool, I want to see more of it. The only thing about it that I don’t like is that one of her back spines has a heart in the middle of it. I understand her transformation was brought about because of her feelings for Arata, but it looks a little silly.
Kaiju Girl Caramelise was a manga I kept thinking about picking up. I didn’t even know it was getting an anime! So I am very excited to watch this show and see where it goes.
