English Dub Review: Goodbye, Lara “Running Through Shiga”
Overview:
Lara wakes up in the human world in Shiga and encounters Grace in pet fish form, kept by Mari.
Our Take:
When I started this episode, I watched the OP because it can sometimes give hints about what might be coming up. While watching it, I noticed that Lara had a scar or something on her tongue, which I figured was a visual cue about losing her voice in the past. What I was worried about was that she wasn’t going to be able to talk in the present day either. I’m not gonna lie, that was going to annoy me. Why bring in an awesome VA like Brianna Knickerbocker if you’re not going to use her? We could still hear her thoughts, I suppose, but still, I’m happy to report that Lara can talk.
I mentioned last week that I could see this end up being a yuri show, and while that’s still on the table, after watching the OP, I think it might go a different way. During the OP, it hints that there is a guy we will meet later or might have already met who seems to be a reincarnation of the prince. If that’s true, I wonder what they’ll do to make it up to Lara. Sure, it wasn’t technically him who did the awful things, but I would like to see it addressed in some way.
Most people who dealt with Lara on her first day in Shiga reacted as you’d expect them to. But can you imagine essentially going to sleep in the 18th century and waking up in modern times? I’d probably throw an Alexa through a window too. Lara was used to carriages that go super slow, not cars that can go sixty miles per hour or more.
So far, I’m very interested in this show. My Anime List states that this will be twelve episodes long, and I’m worried that won’t be enough. There are a lot of things to cover, and I’m worried that will lead to some story beats not getting the time they need. But this show has impressed me a great deal in the first two episodes, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt until they give me a reason not to. I love how much the animation is like a Ghibli film, and that earned a lot of goodwill from me.
