From Tribeca to the Silver Screen: “Captain Zero” Lands NAACP Image Award Nomination, Streaming on AMC+ as Whoopi Goldberg Boards Feature Film
Independent adult animation is hitting a massive high-water mark for representation and psychological storytelling.
Captain Zero: Into the Abyss Part II, the critically acclaimed animated short backed by media accelerator Creative Cypher, has officially secured a nomination for Outstanding Short Form (Animated) at the 57th NAACP Image Awards. Celebrating Black creativity and purpose-driven narrative, the nomination cements the boundary-pushing project as a massive cultural touchstone within the modern animation space.
The stellar news aligns perfectly with a major distribution win for the independent team: Captain Zero is now officially available to stream nationwide on AMC+ as part of the Future of Film Chicago: Episode 3 showcase.
More Than a Superhero Story: Weaponizing Vulnerability
Written and directed by visionary filmmaker Z Cher-Amié, Captain Zero subverts traditional comic book formulas by filtering high-octane action through a deeply grounded, psychological lens.
The story follows Xerxes Hughes, a Haitian-American teenager trying to balance the chaotic everyday realities of being a student, son, and friend. Secretly, however, Xerxes operates as a superhero—waging a dual war against an incredibly dangerous real-world cyberstalker and the literal, monstrously manifested embodiment of his own clinical depression.
Instead of leaning into standard tropes of unyielding invincibility, Cher-Amié’s script treats vulnerability, self-acceptance, and mental health struggles as the ultimate catalysts for human strength.
Whoopi Goldberg Boards “Captain Zero: The Movie”
The massive wave of momentum surrounding the short film, which originally made waves upon its initial release in June 2025, has officially captured the attention of Hollywood royalty. EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg has joined the producing team for the upcoming full-length animated feature adaptation, “Captain Zero: The Movie,” currently in active development at Cutting Edge Animation.
Goldberg will serve as an Executive Producer alongside her longtime collaborator Tom Leonardis under their One Ho Productions banner.
“When I first heard about this project, I loved the theme of getting to a better place,” Goldberg said of her decision to join the project. “It is about not falling into an abyss of sadness and isolation and reminds us that we are not alone, and that whatever is happening, we can get through it. That resonated deeply with me, so I was thrilled to get involved.”
An Elite Creative Ensemble
The 2D animated feature film will expand heavily on the foundation laid out in the original short, retaining its top-tier ensemble voice cast. The production features a powerhouse lineup, including:
-
Keith David (Gargoyles, The Princess and the Frog) as President Curtis
-
Zolee Griggs (Wu-Tang: An American Saga)
-
Gary LeRoi Gray (The Fairly OddParents)
-
Angelica Ross (Pose, American Horror Story)
-
Z Cher-Amié
The feature film’s growing producing team brings together a powerhouse of industry advocates, including Angelica Ross, Troy Pryor, Coty Galloway, Cher-Amié (who also wrote the feature script), and Andre Engco.
