English Dub Review: Wistoria: Wand and Sword “The Party from Hell Begins”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
A horde of monsters from the deepest floors appears, transforming the festive capital into a hellish scene. Sensing that they’re the targets, the Magia Vander stay within the tower. The city’s defenses fall before the mage slayer wielding High Dinoboros. Colette and the dwarves join Will, putting up a desperate resistance. The Headless activates a magic circle, and a Devander appears before Will!
Our Take:
The new year celebration was supposed to be a joyous occasion until the party poopers, Marze and Headless, came in to rain on their parade. By rain, I mean a horde of Dinoboroses that can nullify magic attacks. Obviously, this leaves Will to help out with his sword in hand, despite not qualifying for the tower. But, as it turns out, it’s far from an easy battle to conquer, as the dreaded Devander stands in the way between victory and defeat. I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about this part of the second season, not just for the animation, but also for its adaptation. Usually, a season starts slowly for more than one episode before hitting hard with the action. However, the second season of Wistoria didn’t hold back on raising the stakes sooner than we expected, with Will facing what may be his most intense battle since the praxis.
Obviously, this is due to the formidable Devander, who’s powerful enough to wipe out many magic users with no sweat. But the real deal comes from the end of the episode, in which Rosti makes the ultimate choice to save Will from one of its attacks. I knew it would happen because I accidentally spoiled it myself while browsing through social media. Despite that, it still carries the shock of this tragic loss when I watch it myself, highlighting Will’s self-doubt and his friendship with Rosti throughout season one. While the animation itself had a few still frames that almost foiled this prolonged battle, it quickly compensated with Will’s battle against the Devander, with next week’s episode hoping to put its style to good use.
